Sport - ICC Twenty20 World Cup

There were mixed fortunes in two of the group matches in the inaugural ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup, being played in South Africa. In the opening match at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, the West Indies, who were put in to bat first by South Africa, scored an impressive 205 runs, thanks to a brilliant performance by man of the match Chris Gayle. Gayle scored 117 runs including 10 sixes (both records for this format of the game). However, due to poor fielding and giving away too many extras, South Africa ran out fairly comfortable winners, scoring 208/2 with Herschelle Gibbs contributing an unbeaten 90 runs, despite suffering from a hamstring injury.
In the other match, relative minnows Zimbabwe, stunned the star-studded Australian team at Newlands in Cape Town last night, by restricting them to 138/9 and by surpassing this total with just 1 ball to spare.
